60 years ago this year, on 4th November 1957 British Railways introduced new Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) on many lines in Hampshire to replace steam services. The units became known as "Hampshire” Units, and operated trains between Alton and Southampton, until the lines closure on 4th February 1973.
To celebrate the success of these trains and to mark the 60th anniversary, join us on Saturday 30th September where we will be hosting a visiting mainline tour from Hastings to Alresford "The Alpine Sunset” operated by our friends at Hastings Diesels Ltd. The tour will be formed of a 6 car Hastings DEMU. Details of the tour can be found at: http://www.hastingsdiesels.co.uk/
During the Hastings units visit to the Mid Hants Railway, it will operate a return trip from Alresford 12:40 to Alton and back for MHR ticket holders, giving a rare chance to travel in one of these trains over our line.
This will be in addition to our normal two train service which will be operated with one steam locomotive operating the 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 departures from Alresford, and our own Hampshire unit DEMU No.1125 operating the 10:50, 12:50 and 14:50 services from Alton.
