75079 - British Railways Standard Class 4MT

Status Under Restoration

Notes

75079 is a British Railways Standard Class 4 4-6-0 mixed traffic locomotive completed at Swindon in January 1956, one of a batch built for the Southern Region. Entering service at Exmouth Junction it was soon allocated to Basingstoke where it operated semi-fast passenger trains to Salisbury and Waterloo among other duties and and destinatins. During this period a double chimney was fitted to improve performance.

In 1963 it was re-allocated to Eastleigh from where it continued operating passenger services, including sometimes boat trains, and other duties until withdrawal in late 1966. In 1982 it was bought from Barry scrap yard with the help of Plymouth City Council and restoration started at the Plym Valley Railway. It was bought by MHRPS arriving at Alresford in April 2007.

Completion of 75079’s restoration is eagerly awaited because of its perfect size for the Mid-Hants and also many members, volunteers and visitors have memories of it working here in the Hampshire area.
